By ANDREA O'NEIL Russell School has won a bright new makeover and is seeking locals handy with paintbrushes to help with the spruce-up. The Cannons Creek pri- mary school is one of 20 worthy community projects nationwide to have won free paint from paint company Dulux. Russell principal Sose Annandale says the 100 litres of paint will be used on the interior of the school's dilapi- dated hall. The hall dates from the 1960s, and was prob- ably last painted 20 years ago, she says. The white walls and ceiling are looking tired, and the kitchen and toilet paint job is rundown and dated. Which colour will be used in the hall is yet to be decided, Ms Annandale says. Russell's school colour is a dark superhero blue'', but a final colour decision will be made after consultation with Dulux. The school is calling on its community of parents and neighbours to help paint the school in springtime. The first job will be a great spring-clean'' to prepare for the painting -- walls need sanding and cupboards need to be cleared of broken furni- ture and old gym equipment. We have a lot of cupboards with a lot of scary things,'' Ms Annandale says. Many hands make light work.'' The hall is used not just by schoolchildren but by locals for church events, birthday parties, meetings and even weddings. Ms Annandale says the school won the competition because she emphasised in her application how central the hall is to the community. [The hall is] used during daytime by the school but nearly every night of the week and all over the weekend it's used by community groups. We're the caretakers but everybody uses it, and that's the way it should be.'' One community group is already on board: Plimmerton Rotary will help pay for scaf- folding for the redecoration. The hall makeover is just one of the improvements planned by Ms Annandale, who became principal this year after Alistair Hudson departed. Two of the school's seven classrooms will be spruced up, with others to follow in next year's budget, she says. We want to change things.'' Titahi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club was the only other local recipient of free paint from Dulux, winning 60 litres. Club captain Byron Mal- colmson says the paint will be used as part of a bigger revamp of its toilet and shower rooms, and will help patch up graffiti on the exterior of the building. It remains to be seen whether the club will choose Dulux's pale pink colour named Titahi Bay', Mr Malcolmson says.
