My name is Mathew Samuela and I am the new neigh- bourhood support co-ordinator for the Porirua area. I work from the Cannons Creek Community Police Base next to the laundrette. My aim is to make our homes, neighbourhoods and communities safer and more caring places in which to live in, by starting a Neighbourhood Support Group in your area and getting to know your neighbours. A lack of reporting any sus- picious criminal activity from residents is one of the main reasons why criminals get away with crime. Prevention is the key – report anything suspicious before a crime is committed. Call Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111: all information is confidential and you can remain anonymous. Recently copper thieves have been responsible for a spate of burglaries on empty Housing New Zealand premises. One tradesman came across a person who claimed to be a cleaner. His suspicions were aroused and he reported the inci- dent to the police. A good neighbour in Whitby reported suspicious behaviour of a white van at a neighbour’s prop- erty; police found stolen goods in the van and arrested the culprits. In the past week, police had caught a group of teenage bur- glars who have been responsible for a spate of crime. Belonging to a Neighbourhood Support Group has many advantages: safety and security, looking out for each other and your homes. You discuss issues common to your area, sharing knowledge. This helps build community pride, and strong connections with your neighbours could be extremely important in the event of a civil emergency. There is no cost to being a mem- ber of Neighbourhood Support. Remember, reducing crime is not just a problem for the police, it is everyone’s problem.
