The station refurbishment -- a new roof, waiting area and model train shop -- was opened earlier this year. Last Wednesday s ceremony was to recognise an award received from the Rail Heritage Trust of New Zealand. A brass plaque takes pride of place in the station s waiting room, one of just two resto- ration awards handed out by the trust this year. The trust s executive chairman Euan McQueen said the three parties involved in the project -- Porirua City Council, KiwiRail and the Plimmerton volunteers -- have set an example he hoped would be replicated in the future. They have all created a sense of community here; it s through these three groups working together that has seen this station have such a positive turnaround. These awards are not given out each year but I m really impressed; it s a model of how a station restoration can go. Porirua Mayor Nick Leggett acknowledged the project had come to fruition under his pre- decessor, Jenny Brash, and paid tribute to the council s manager of the villages programme, Ian Barlow. I think this award recognises the work that Ian has put in, and the Plimmerton community that saw a need, pursued it and came to a solution. KiwiRail heard the call from residents . . . and everyone got a better outcome. Kiwirail s metro manager Scott Brooks said while they and residents had very different plans for the station initially, the result was absolutely fantastic as they worked together to satisfy all parties. Convictions for inlet works Roil Contracting Ltd and Patrick Roil have been convicted and fined $60,000 for stream reclamation works in the Pauatahanui Inlet. Mr Roil and RCL had pleaded guilty to charges laid by Greater Wellington Regional Council under the Resource Management Act 1991. GWRC laid three charges against each party in December 2010 alleging about 60 metres of the stream had been reclaimed and smothered with cleanfill and non-cleanfill material, causing it to be diverted and become laden with sediment. The stream is an unnamed tribu- tary of the Pauatahanui Stream within the Pauatahanui catchment, an area defined in the regional fresh- water plan as having a high degree of natural character. An abatement notice was issued, requiring RCL to remedy the environmental effects of the reclamation which resulted in an application for resource consent. These works are not yet complete. In delivering her decision, Environ- ment Court judge Kelly noted the par- ties guilty pleas, co-operation and lack of previous convictions. GWRC environment regulation manager Alistair Cross urged landowners and contractors to get in touch with GWRC consents and com- pliance staff for advice on works and consent requirements. The Pauatahanui catchment where these reclamation works were under- taken is one of high ecological signifi- cance and warrants careful manage- ment and protection. Though we are pleased site remediation is now in progress, the parties were aware that they needed resource consent before undertaking the works and could have avoided this situation. Funky Town: Porirua shoppers got up and joined in the groove, doing dance and tai chi exercises under the canopies on Wednesday as part of the Service Provider and Agency Expo. Do a little dance By KAROLINE TUCKEY Porirua health and safety providers gathered under the canopies on Wednesday to assist city-goers wellbeing. The third annual Service Provider and Agency Expo was meant to be held during New Zealand Safety Week but was postponed due to the snow and cold weather. Coastguard Mana, Red Cross, Pregnancy Help Inc, Neighbourhood Support Porirua, Police, Porirua City Council and the Cannons Creek Fanau Centre were among those who joined organisers ACC in promoting the theme, Safety and wellbeing of all people in Porirua , with information stalls and dance classes. It s really about how people can come and access these services. It s supporting the community and rais- ing awareness among our community, so they can sup- port themselves, said ACC community injury preven- tion consultant Petelo Alosio.
