Screenplay by Dan Fogelman, directed by Glenn Ficarra, John Requa. 118 minutes, rated M (offensive language, sexual references). Showing at Reading Porirua and Light House Pauatahanui cinemas. Going the distance: Steve Carell and Julianne Moore do a fine job negotiating the battlefield of love and divorce in Crazy, Stupid, Love, although at times it feels like Carell's comedic tics belong in a different picture. When it comes to me and roman- tic comedies, two is the magic number. I m not talking about the chemistry of the two lead actors, or the fact rom-coms are a date-night couples thing. If I m lucky, I can get away with only reviewing two rom-coms in a given year; if they're lucky, they ll get two stars out of five. I m no art house snob and I don t buy the well, it s a chick-flick cop out. If a movie is romantic and funny, which by definition is what a rom-com claims to be, it should appeal to both sexes -- at least, the best ones should. But rom-coms usually feign humour and passion by way of endless cliche and contrivances, a pretty setting and a fluffy soundtrack. You pay $30 for a cute-meet, a few montages and a third-act break-up- cum-mad-dash-to-the-airport, then walk away considering if there was a single sincere moment in the entire picture. The trailer and general premise for Crazy, Stupid, Love suggests grander ambitions than your average night out with Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. With the spark extinguished from their 24-year marriage, Emily (Julianne Moore) drops the D-word on Cal (Steve Carell). Their 13-year-old son Robbie is besotted with his 17-year-old babysitter Jessica (Analeigh Tipton, refreshingly gangly rather than a sex bomb), but she lusts for Cal. Meanwhile, straight arrow lawyer Hannah (Emma Stone) is tempted to take a walk on the wild side with lady- killer Jacob (Ryan Gosling), who in turn is mentoring Cal on how to rediscover his manhood and mend his broken heart one one-night-stand at a time. Through the various entanglements, the picture juxtaposes notions and gestures of pure romance (soul mates, crushes) with more superficial relation- ships (affairs and flings). And it does it pretty well -- three or four scenes are among the best I ve seen in 2011. Try not to be moved when Emily and Cal fleetingly find common ground waiting for a parent-teacher interview to start, or when Jacob s shallow exterior falls apart (man, I wish Gosling and Stone had more scenes together). Dan Fogelman, most known for the Cars movies, has produced a script full of tenderness and honesty, his words done ample justice by the wonderful cast. It s just a shame the picture s tone is totally whack. It seems somebody wanted to have their mature romantic comedy and irreverent Steve Carell vehicle too. Every other scene Carell cracks and pops with the weird noises and neurotic schtick that worked so well on Anchorman and The 40 Year Old Virgin, but jars here. We even have a scene, like in Virgin, where a borderline-retarded Carell is taught how to pick up women. The bonkers finale, when all the relationships intersect in an emotional traffic jam, belongs in a dumber movie. Still, this flick tries a few different tricks. If you see only two rom-coms in 2011, make this one of them.
