Photo: KAROLINE TUCKEY. Peter Chapman says he is still in shock over win- ning coach of the year at Porirua Sports Awards. The head of Porirua Taekwon-Do was recognised for his service to the sport and his desire to have club members perform community service while they learn the martial art. I was looking forward to a nice dinner but then I had to get up on the stage. It was pretty hum- bling to receive an award amongst all those awe- some sportspeople.'' Chapman established the Porirua club in 2004 and says people thought I was nuts'' when he bought Natone Hall in 2006. He has 40 regular members, runs classes for women on Wednesdays, an open class on a Friday, and even lends his services to the St George and Porirua Vikings rugby league clubs for conditioning. This city has an amazing reputation for sport and I'm glad to be part of that. I love seeing people coming through the club, maturing in the sport and as people, that's the reward for me. Porirua Taekwon-Do is a family, that's why we're so strong.'' Chapman says part of the philosophy of tae- kwodo's founder was realising you are part of a community, so at least three times a year he approaches churches or other groups that may need assistance of any kind. Whether we're helping an elderly person in their home or tidying up someone's yard, it's important for our members to know they're part of something more than just our club.'' Funding through the Mana Community Grants Foundation and Pub Charity has been crucial to his success, he says. Victorious: The Tawa Premier 1 girls' hockey team claimed the Wellington title for their division this season. Tawa claims finals By KAROLINE TUCKEY The Elsdon Hockey Turf is proving to be a winning facility for local hockey clubs. The Tawa Premier 1 girls' team won a closely fought final, 1-0, over Rangikura School recently. It was a high-tempo, exhilarating final which left supporters from both sides sitting on the edge of their seats,'' Tawa P1 girls' coach Jenni Cronin said. Not only did the P1 Girls win the premier competition, but the Tawa P4 Girls' team also fought through to their final match, and played a nail- biting closer, only losing to the Toa P4 Girls' side in extra-time. Hockey clubs throughout Porirua and Tawa have reaped the benefits of the Elsdon Hockey Turf, which opened in 2008, Ms Cronin said. The general success of the teams within the Porirua region...hasina large part been due to the flow-on effect from having a locally-based hockey turf facility at Elsdon. It is exciting to witness a growing pool of talented hockey players within the Porirua region and this is clearly evident from the numerous successful team results and the num- ber of individuals from the region being selected to represent Wellington.'' Special thanks were due to Rex Manning and Rebecca Noble for their work in making the Elsdon turf available for the clubs, Ms Cronin said. Eight girls from the Tawa P1 team have been selected for the Wellington Representative squad: Annaleisha Wood, Casey Elliston, Danielle Wat- son, Lauren Walker, Saasha Masters, Ashleigh Morgan, Isabella Cronin-Stone and Trinity Clark.
