Was $9,995 NOW $8,995 Go for gold: A line of archers take aim at the Mana Archery Club. The club has about 50 members, but is hoping to attract some newcomers with a series of Have-a-Go days over summer. Archers target growth By KAROLINE TUCKEY Mana Archery Club will be holding a series of free Have- a-Go days and beginners workshops, beginning next week. Coaching co-ordinator Graeme Dodds says the club puts a lot of effort into teaching, to help grow the club and to produce well-trained archers. Some people might think it s fairly simple -- put an arrow on to the string of a bow, pull it back and then let it go, however, if you want to hit the target in front of you and do it safely, there is a little more to it than that. The club will hold the first two in a series of open days on November 19 and December 10, which will give newcomers half an hour with a tutor for a safety lesson and the chance to try their aim on a target 10 metres away. Ten metres may not sound very far, but it can be quite challenging for a beginner in the sport, Dodds says. Those keen to continue can then progress to a six-week course for beginners, costing $60. Archery is a good sport for all shapes and sizes , Dodds says, and it can be a good family activity, as anyone 11 years and up can participate. For safety reasons close-fitting tops are necessary, and Dodds recommends participants bring warm outdoor cloth- ing to put on when not using the range. If the weather is bad the sessions will continue indoors. The Have-a-Go Days run from 10am to noon. Numbers are limited, to book email firstname.lastname@example.org. The best in their league An honour shared: Porirua Vikings chairperson Pania Houkamau- Ngaheu might have an iron grip on the Grassroots Club of the Year trophy, but says it is an award that will be shared by every member of the organisation. By KRIS DANDO The Porirua Vikings Rugby League Club may still be stinging from its premier side losing the grand final, but can take comfort from the recog- nition that it is the best club in the country. The New Zealand Rugby League awarded the Vikings the Grassroots Club of the Year trophy at its awards dinner in Auckland last week. The event, attended by the likes of Sam Perrett, Shaun Johnson, Richie Blackmore and NZRL hierarchy, was a proud occasion for the Vikings. The club was represented by presi- dent Bernie Wood, volunteer and jun- ior coach Antz Akavi and chairperson Pania Houkamau-Ngaheu, the latter saying it was absolutely magical to be lauded for the club s efforts, not just on the park. We ve got the right balance of results for our juniors and seniors, and things we re achieving in the Porirua community -- rugby league is a tool for us to help our community. She says the excellent relationship with Porirua City Council, the ability to keep Ascot Park litter-free, planting days, links with the Drive Safe and anti-violence campaigns and general social responsiveness held the Vikings in good stead with the judges. The club is also looking at launching an academy in the new year. The panel told us we re an excellent model for other clubs, and I was just rapt to hear that. You look at a guy like Antz, who was here more than 30 years ago when this club started. He s what the Vikings are about -- it s family and a commitment to the community. The award is for all the volunteers, coaches, managers, parents and players who don t get paid to put their time into the sport they love.
