Zb`a R[Q `b[QNf Picnic paddle at hidden gem of a park TODDLER IN TOW KELLY ETEVENEAUX River of gold: The Hutt River and Kaitoke Regional Park makes for a tranquil playground for kids and parents alike. KIDS WELCOME EAT OUT at The Maranui Cafe ´in Lyall Bay, Wellington Highchairs: Yes Kids Meals: Yes Kids Drinks/Fluffies: Yes Changing Facilities: Yes, in bathroom downstairs The Maranui has a great atmosphere, friendly staff and beautiful views of the sea. The kids will love spotting planes as they take off and land at Wellington Airport nearby. Just be aware that the cafe gets very busy and you can sometimes wait 10 minutes to get a table and 20 minutes for food. There is a playground and beautiful beach for relaxation right on the cafe's doorstep. FROM PEOPLE WHO KNOW TOP TIPS from parents on surviving summer outings ''A squirty bottle of water specifically for washing off sandy feet before getting back into the car is good.'' -- Susie ''Leave a bag packed so you just have to add drinks and snacks to it and go. When togs, etc., are out of the washing machine put them back in the bag instead of in a drawer'' -- Paula ''We bought a beach shelter from Bunnings for 10 bucks. Always best to have shade.'' -- Tina ''I recently heard that baby powder is the best thing to remove sand from damp skin, making it easier to reapply sunscreen or just get cleaned up before heading home.'' -- Lynsey To borrow a phrase from one of my favourite Aussie movies, The Cas- tle: Ah, the serenity. What a hidden treasure Kaitoke Regional Park is. We spent an afternoon picnicking down by the river there and were overwhelmed by the stunning scenery and peaceful feel of the area. Less than half an hour drive from Porirua, Kaitoke Regional Park is the perfect setting for a family picnic or barbecue, bushwalk or, for the really adven- turous, camping. The park has several walking tracks including the Ridge Track which gives you a view over Upper Hutt. The bush setting is magical and it is easy to see why it was used during the filming of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It was a warm, sunny day when we visited and the swimming hole near our picnic spot was being well used by children and adults alike. The river was shallow enough next to our spot for Bailey to paddle happily while we watched from the picnic rug. He had a ball fishing with a long stick along the riverbank and hunting for river monsters in the bushes. There were campers and tents scattered among the trees on the terraces, but it didn t have the cramped feel of other camping grounds. Camping is just $5 per adult and $2 per child, payable at the kiosk on arrival. You can bring your own port- able gas barbecue or use one of the electric ones, free of charge, in the campground shelters. There are flush toilets available but no showers so a dip in the river isn t just for fun. If you head out to the park make sure you take some old bread to feed the ducks so the kids don t end up tossing your picnic lunch in to the river. And don t forget your sunscreen and bug repellent -- they are musts. For more information on Kaitoke Regional Park see : gw.govt.nz/Kaitoke.
