Strong finishing gives Dragons reserves win Young gun: Under-6 St George Dragons player Nali Walters-Tairawhiti on the burst during the recent finals day at Porirua Park. Photo supplied St George Dragons and Porirua Vikings may have missed out on playing in rugby league's premier grand final but victories in other senior and junior grades show that the talent is coming through. At the finals day at Porirua Park on August 11, the Dragons won the reserve grade title at senior level, and their under-13 and under-14 sides won their respective finals. The Vikings, meanwhile, had to be content with victory in the Senior seconds and their Porirua Green team winning the under-11 grade. St George chairperson Stella Teariki says their reserves' win, the club's first senior title since 1979, was a thrilling achievement for the club. They last won the premier grade in 1977 and appeared in the grand final in 1995. In a topsy-turvy game, St George emerged 26-18 winners over Rand- wick. The Dragons led 10-0 at the break and despite their Hutt opponents fighting back hard in the second half, they finished strongly and deserved the win. Developing a winning environ- ment has been the work of many people and it bodes well for the coming seasons, she says. Colin Sharrock has done a mar- vellous job as reserve grade coach this season and along with the changes brought in by first-year premier coach Daryl Rolleston, it gives St George a much more posi- tive base to further the club's prog- ress at senior level for the 2013 season." The Vikings' senior seconds out- played their Petone counterparts to take the trophy, but trailed 6-0 early in the game. Some individual magic from 18-year-old Mauriri Mason, com- bining with Joseph Hickey, brought them level. The game was won up front, with MVP of the day Monty Makalio working tirelessly on attack and defence, as he and his fellow for- wards shouldered the bulk of the work. The second half was a pro- cession for the Vikings, with three more tries cementing the 30-12 win. St George had its junior prizegiv- ing on Saturday at Pataka, with former Kiwi captain Ruben Wiki as guest speaker. Classy Coupe: This 1932 Coupe is bound to be fussed over by people at Porirua's annual Hot Rod Show on Sunday. Photo: SUPPLIED Classy chassis for everyone to enjoy By KRIS DANDO If you are into choppers, imports, hot rods and drag cars, then you will want to be at North City Shop- ping Centre this Sunday. The annual Hot Rod Show, hos- ted by Western Bays Street Rod- ders, is on from 10am on the second level car park. Club vice president Colin Wans- brough says it is the perfect oppor- tunity to inspect more than 100 machines proudly displayed by local members and a few from out of town. One of the highlights will be two drag cars from Hamilton; they're pretty amazing. We have a lot of bikes this year and plenty of other impressive vehicles -- it's a big day for us, a chance to show off the hard work and love we put in. There will be a wide appeal we believe and you can duck into the mall to get a Father's Day gift for the following weekend. North City has been fantastic; very supportive of the show.'' Last year more than 1800 visit- ors went through. Wansbrough, who will be showing his 1956 Chevy, hopes for similar crowds again. The club has adopted'' Flynn Brodie, a Titahi Bay two-year-old who has the rare pachyonychia con- genita affliction, as its fundraising cause for the year. It's very fitting for us to help them, they're a young, local fam- ily,'' Wansbrough says. The car show is at North City from 10am to 5.30pm, August 26. Entry $3.
