Porirua chocolate company Whit- taker s is never short of fans or praise, but topped itself this year with two awards, three popular new chocolate flavours, an ice- cream launch and a chocolate recipe book coming out next month. The company was voted New Zealand s most trusted brand in the annual Reader s Digest Most Trusted Survey, moving up from the number three spot last year Whittaker s marketing man- ager Philip Poole says: We thought it was fantastic, we were obviously happy that we won it. It s fantastic for a New Zealand brand to win. He says the company has stuck to a single strategy for years -- to produce high-quality chocolate. It s important to push the fact that we re a family-owned, New Zealand company, but in the end people will buy the chocolate they like best. Brand manager Jasmine Griffin was named Rookie Marketer of the Year at the NZ Marketing Awards in May, winning praise for her social marketing success, gaining 154,000 fans on Facebook and 9000 Twitter followers. Ms Griffin joined Whittaker s straight out of a Victoria Univer- sity marketing degree and says she has learned to be a social media guru on the job, because it was barely taught at uni. We hope that it s interesting and relevant and that s what people really respond to, she says. The company has launched three new flavours -- peanut but- ter, hokey pokey and white choc- olate raspberry -- and its collabor- ation with Killinchy Gold icecream on Facebook, gaining hundreds of likes and comments for each announcement. Facebook was the inspiration for Whittaker s first foray into publishing -- its first recipe book, Whittaker's Passion for Chocolate, was created after fans requested and shared chocolate recipes on the company s page, Ms Griffin says. It will be launched in November. New supermarket: Owner/operat- or of Tawa New World, Cameron Hogg, with father Neil. Photo: SUPPLIED. New World open after $14m redevelopment The new environmentally-friendly New World in Tawa opened last week, after a $14 million redevel- opment of the Woolworths store. Owner Cameron Hogg says the 2800 sqm store will serve the growing Tawa community well Our family has been in the gro- cery trade for four generations. Along with my parents, Neil and Robyn, and my sister Nicole, we are really looking forward to help- ing families get the best out of their supermarket experience and make their lives just that little bit easier. We have really appreciated the support of the community dur- ing the construction period, so we can t wait to wow them with this leading edge store." Store innovations include baked-to-order pizzas, a cafe sell- ing gelato, inspiration centres for shoppers to grab everything they need in one go, market-style pro- duce displays with specials on sea- sonal fruit and veges. The original pedestrian walk- way has been upgraded and realigned through the newly- refurbished mall, creating a safer and more welcoming thoroughfare to Oxford Street, and additional retail opportunities. "New World Tawa will also be one of the most energy efficient supermarkets in the country, with green initiatives like energy- efficient lights, waste heat reclaim, covers on the frozen sec- tions, and a new refrigeration plant."
