Secure power cords out of harm's way, with cord clips, quick- release power cords or multi- boxes, and secure loose cords or wires to the wall. Fasten rugs and mats with anti- slip tape, or spray on a non-slip coating, use carpet grips for mats, repair damaged carpet on stairs, and if you're buying a new rug, look for one with a non-slip backing. Avoid using chairs as ladders. Use a ladder or step ladder to reach high objects and store heavy, regularly used objects down lower. Wipe up spills as soon as they happen, with mops, sponges or cloths, use floor mats to absorb excess water and, if renovating, install non-slip flooring in wet rooms like the bathroom, kitchen and laundry. More than 1300 Porirua residents made claims to ACC because of a fall at home last year, with many of the injuries preventable. Recently-released figures show 11,306 people from the Wellington region -- 1336 from Porirua -- were hurt in and around the home. That's 44 claims for every 1000 people aged 25 to 64. Overall, 40 per cent of all claims in 2011 happened because of falls. ACC's general manager insurance and prevention services, John Beaglehole, says one small trip or slip can have big consequences. "An injury can completely change your life for a while. It can stop you from doing the things you enjoy, like catching up with friends or playing with your children. People often need to take time off work too, affecting their income. ACC figures show 10,000 people are off work for a week or more because of a fall at home." Mr Beaglehole says Kiwis need to watch for five common hazards -- moss, rugs, power cords, chairs and puddles.
