The organisation, which organises cleanups and plantings in the community, has been in a state of limbo since Hayden Nash became chairman in July. KPB s only employee, co-ordinator John Poppleton, was dismissed and committee members have expressed opposition to Mr Nash s actions. At a tense meeting last Tuesday, Mr Nash made the decision to do away with the organisation s committee. He would not speak to Kapi-Mana News about the move. Former chairman Jeremy Ander- sen, who was on the committee and has been involved in KPB for three years, said his questions to Mr Nash at the meeting were ignored. He said two other committee members resigned recently. Hayden has totally decided this is what s going to happen, it s a unilat- eral decision. He has no idea of the history, passion and commitment of people involved. We re dealing with someone who is just bizarre and childish. Mr Andersen says statements about the organisation not having a constitution and committee members choosing to not be involved in the national conference are inaccurate. [Long-serving KPB chairman] Dennis Ormsby was a very high- ranking public servant and the notion that KPB ran free of any constitution is nonsense. We need to set the record straight, too, that three days before the national con- ference all the committee members were asked for $200 each. As hosts, our committee is supposed to attend for free. Graves policy adopted By KRIS DANDO The graves policy has been set in stone. Porirua City Council formally adopted its Cemeteries Management Plan last Wednesday, which addresses the issue of offensive words and images on gravestones. It courted controversy recently when the use of gang insignia was debated by councillors. Mayor Nick Leggett said the policy was never about singling out one group. This reinforces what has been going on at Whenua Tapu for decades. The gang example was just that, an example -- we are just put- ting down on paper the standards that we expect.
