Photo supplied Two Porirua waka ama clubs recently returned from the sprint nationals with a number of medals. The Hawaiki Nui Tuarua club, who are known by their Don't Touch my Food moniker, took three junior teams to the event, held at Lake Karapiro near Cambridge from Janu- ary 15 to 19. More than 2500 competitors took part from clubs across the country, an increase on previous years. One of the Don't Touch my Food coaches, Mandy Hatton, says their paddlers had been training on Pori- rua Harbour and Pauatahanui Inlet three times a week since September, and it paid off. The two J16 teams -- green and black -- combined to win gold in the W12, 500-metre race, while the J16 black crew took silver in both the 500m and 1000m races. Meanwhile, the intermediate girls waka ama team Rangitopeora from the Toa Waka Ama Club won gold in both the 500m and 1000m races and boys from a team based at Natone Park School won a gold -- double hull race -- and bronze -- W6 1000m -- in the intermediate section. Byron Kelly-Nansen, Site Euta, Samuel Makiiti, Hoani Phillips, Jaylib Takerei and Tamahoukura Gunson were the Natone paddlers. Hatton says along with the training put in by all the Porirua clubs, the Porirua Canoe and Kayak Club ran two regattas in November to practise racing. It provided an opportunity for less- experienced paddlers to have a go and these were both excellent events. It's easy to see why this is one of the fastest-growing sports in New Zealand.'' Tawa club up in the rankings Tawa Swimming Club im- proved its ranking against bigger clubs at the Swim- ming Wellington Long Course Summer Champion- ships. Tawa finished fourth out of 38 clubs at the compe- tition, held at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre from January 18 to 21. Tawa had been ranked seventh in 2012. Swimmers Callum Sinclair, 15, and first-time competitor Danika Viskovic, 10, topped their respective age groups. Joel Crampton, 10, broke the Wellington age group record in the 50 metre butterfly. Eighteen club records were also broken during the three-day event, including one dating back to 1987 in the 14-year-old girls' 100m butterfly. Tawa swimmers collected 42 medals: 19 gold medals, 14 silver medals and nine bronze medals. Nine- teen medals were awarded to junior swimmers aged 12 and under. Despite swimmers only returning to their home Tawa pool in November after it was closed for a year for extensive refurbishment and earthquake strengthening, head coach Jason McPhee says the results are reflec- tive of the training pro- gramme and the addition of new and younger swimmers. The quality and delivery of our coaching programme continues to attract swim- mers to the club, regardless of the distance they are trav- elling to train.'' Despite the success at the weekend there is no let up in training, with the focus for many of the swimmers shift- ing to the Junior National Championships in Welling- ton next month for swim- mers aged 12 and under, and the National Age Group Championships for swim- mers aged 13 to 18, followed by the NZ Open in March. Trophies and confetti for Plimmerton club Plimmerton Croquet Club's year is off to a flying start with trophy wins coming in already. In the North Island Association Croquet Championship, Plimmerton's Wayne Gair finished first and Graeme Fisher was second. In the Wellington Challenge Series, Gair and Fisher beat Petone 26-0, and then Wellington 26-1. Peter Hill and Arthur von Sturmer took the McKenzie cup off Wellington in a nail-biting 12-11 victory. The next opening evening for twilight golf croquet will be 5.30pm till 8pm on Saturday, February 9. Call Tom Berry- man on 236 8877 to book. The club recently set up courts and mallets for guests at a wedding in the rose garden at Aotea Lagoon. Call Tom Berryman to discuss your wedding plans.
