18 KAPI-MANA NEWS, FEBRUARY 26, 2013 WALKING Walking is a quick cheap way to get fit. To plan your own walks go to www.pathfinder.co.nz. This website enables you to filter in a range of criteria to assist you plan your walk. This includes bathroom facilities, dogs on or off the lead and even a café along the way if you wish. There is something for all abilities and interests. If the internet isn't for you our walkway brochure is available from the Porirua libraries and Porirua City Council reception. Don't forget our QR codes now installed at the top 10 walkways in Porirua. It's a great way to learn more about the area you're visiting. Get your sneakers on for Parks Week! Parks Week is an annual campaign which aims to promote the value of parks in our local community and with over 953 hectares of parks and reserves in Porirua it seems crazy not to be boasting about it. That equates to 176 parks and reserves, including our playgrounds. A range of private and public events will take place across New Zealand next week to spread the word that parks are essential to healthy, happy and strong communities. This year's theme "Get healthy by Nature" is about linking healthy living with parks. In other words make the most of Porirua's parks, enjoy the sur- roundings and get that body moving. The health benefits from walking, cy- cling and movement as part of your daily routine are immeasurable. Simply being in a park is also good for your physical and mental health; listening to the birds, the wind in the trees or even the children in the playground while walking -- it's about life balance, lifestyle and taking some time for yourself to enjoy the outdoors. Register at www.conservationvolunteers.co.nz COLONIAL KNOB Colonial Knob is the local gut buster for anyone wanting a challenge -- it boasts walkers, runners and sprinters (believe it or not!) at all fitness levels walking up and down throughout the day. Colonial Knob track is sheltered in bush for much of the way and offers a tranquil setting alongside an attractive stream with a set of stairs that always test the heart rate! The view at the top is worth the trek!
