The family and friends of Jasmine and Jack Underhill gathered at Whe- nua Tapu cemetery earlier this month to lay Jack's ashes to rest with his late wife and to unveil their headstone. The February 8 event marked the end of a long relationship between the people of Porirua and two of the city's most outstanding citizens, said daughter Yvonne Underhill-Sem. Jasmine Underhill, nee Pama- tatau, was the first Pacific Island woman in New Zealand to hold the office of deputy mayor, a position she held from 1989 till 2001. Following Jasmine's death in 2005 her name was commemorated by the naming of the Jasmine Underhill Reserve on Aotea Drive. Yvonne said equally important in Jasmine's life was her commitment to Pacific women and she was an important figure in the formation of Pacifica Cannons Creek. Jack Underhill will be remem- bered as a man of his community. He held several positions on different school boards, was a lifelong member of the Cannons Creek Swim Club and in his later years took to walking and became an active member of the Ora Toa Dashers Taupo relay team. Jasmine and Jack raised their six children in Porirua and enriched the lives of many others.
