Toru Fetu children are garden gurus By KRIS DANDO The cabbages and taro are plentiful in the garden of Toru Fetu Kinder- garten and the children are seeing the benefits. Children's Commissioner Russell Wills visited the Cannons Creek kindy last week, checking how the Seeds of Hope project, which kicked off late last year, was faring. As part of Strong Pacific Families Week, 10 early childhood centres in Porirua built vegetable gardens with help from a number of community groups. The strategy encourages interaction with the community, healthy eating, and is a fun way to introduce horticulture to children who get to watch their seeds grow. Dr Wills, a paediatrician in Hast- ings, said the Toru Fetu kids clearly knew their way around a garden. He helped them collect taro, cabbage and silverbeet to make a delicious and healthy morning tea. This is an amazing way to include whanau in the process, these chil- dren are taking home very important skills. This [strategy] works and garden- ing and cooking is good for the soul, people are proud of growing their own food.'' Dr Wills said while there is a lot of angst about child poverty in New Zealand, Seeds of Hope shows how communities and families can work successfully together to achieve worthy goals.
