By KRIS DANDO Kris Faafoi says having delegates from 22 Pacific nations in Porirua recently was both relaxing and a per- fect chance to network. The Mana MP hosted the delegates in Pataka at the end of a four-day forum to streng- then bonds between Pacific nations and New Zealand. Sunday prayers held in Par- liament, in what was thought to be a first, were a highlight, as were discussions about leadership issues, the econ- omy and enterprise. The Pataka event also involved an impromptu piano performance and plenty of singing, Mr Faafoi says. It was a great chance to kick back and relax, meet new people and invite people from Porirua to mingle with the delegates. We had [barber- shop quartet] The Fource, highlighting the talent here in this city. I was able to forge close connections with people from Tokelau, there were real bonds made that will lead to practical things being achieved down the track. Future forums will be held to maintain the momentum that has been created, as stronger ties will benefit New Zealand. Reps for a cause: Paremata ex-soldier Richard Williams is planning a 24-hour exercise marathon in aid of the Fallen Heroes' Trust charity, which supports families of soldiers killed in action. One super soldier By ANDREA O'NEIL Come watch me suffer, says an ex-soldier planning a 24-hour exercise marathon in aid of a military charity. Paremata personal trainer Richard Williams, 25, will attempt to complete 1000 reps each of sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups, squats, lunges and thruster squats with a 20 kilogram barbell, a stunt he has named the Crazy 24 hours of 1000 reps . In total he ll complete 8000 reps in 24 hours. All money raised will go to the New Zealand Fallen Heroes Trust, set up late last year to support families of soldiers killed or seriously injured in service. Paying chil- dren s school fees is one way the charity helps families. Mr Williams served as a trooper in Afghanistan for six months in 2009, and person- ally knew three soldiers killed there last year: Pralli Durrer, Luke Tamatea and Richard Harris. When I found out it really hit home that we re lucky that we came home in one piece, Mr Williams says. This is about giving back to those who have paid the price and lost a loved one. Mr Williams will leave Pori- rua and his job at Jetts Gym in mid-May to start afresh in Christchurch, and wanted to mark his departure with something significant. I want to leave the gym and Porirua doing something for the community, he says. I m just trying to do my part for them and give back. People are welcome to come to Jetts and watch Mr Williams attempt the 8000 reps. He is also looking for supporters to tally up his reps. Spectators can also get involved: for a $2 donation people can join in for 20 reps. Personally, I think I can do it, he says of beating his own record for reps. It s going to be a long 24 hours, but it s going to be fun. The 8000-rep marathon is from 9am on Saturday, May 4 to 9am on Sunday, May 5 at Jetts Gym, Norrie St. Donate at the gym or directly to Westpac account 03-0584-0281562-00.
