CINEMADDICT WITH KYLIE KLEIN-NIXON AFTER EARTH 1/2 Directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Written by M. Night Shyamalan, Gary Whitta and Will Smith. Starring Will Smith, Jaden Smith and Sophie Okonedo. Rated M -- violence. Playing at Reading Porirua, Reading Courtenay, Event Queensgate and Downtown Coastlands. Big budget sci-fi is all the rage in Hollywood at the moment, so it's exciting to see Will Smith (Independence Day, Men In Black, I, Robot), the undisputed king of sci-fi actioners, return to the multiplex with After Earth. Disconcerting then that he spends most of the film sitting out the action and bleeding profusely. But it's all in a good cause, as After Earth sees Smith hand the action baton to his son, Jaden. It's 1000 years in the future and humanity has fled a poisoned earth for Nova Prime in a galaxy far, far away. Embroiled in a war with an alien species that hunts by smelling fear, humans have evolved a form of fearless fighting called ghosting. Troubled teen Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith), has grown up in the shadow of his ubermench father, Cypher (Will Smith) -- a hero of the alien wars. When the fractious pair crash land on a mission to deliver an alien to a training operation, Cypher's injuries mean Kitai must rise to the chal- lenges the hostile-yet-familiar planet presents if they are going to survive. Gorgeous to look at with a lot of elegant design and rich world building, After Earth is as good a space opera as any we've seen lately, and it's defi- nitely elevated by showcasing Smith and son. Unfortunately, the touching dynamic Smith and Jaden work hard to bring to the story is let down by dialogue so bad you can almost smell it before you hear it. Director and writer M Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense, The Village, The Last Air Bender) is not known for subtlety and he provides some real clunkers for Smith and the supporting cast to wrap their chops around. Add to that some over-earnest messages'' -- fear is choice, the power is within you, aliens are nasty -- and some icky pop-spirituality, and it just mud- dles what could have been a charming coming of age in space film. It's no stinker like Shyamalan's Last Air Bender though. At the heart of the film there's the gem of a tale about fatherhood, vulnerability and growing up played out by two people who clearly love working together and that's definitely worth a look.
