Photo: NAYA BLUES PHOTOGRAPHY Tiffany wins big in makeup contest By TALIA CARLISLE Porirua hairdresser Tiffany Williams has won more than $2000 worth of makeup in a national competition. The 24-year-old former Tawa College pupil was one of seven national finalists to attend the first annual Make Me Up competition in Auckland s ASB Showgrounds on July 6. The competition was open to makeup artists, makeup students and hairdressers. Applicants were required to submit a photo of an original makeup design related to their cultural heritage, with a fantasy theme. Once selected as a finalist, Wil- liams and her model, sister-in-law Lisa Cherrie, flew to Auckland, where she had four hours to recreate the look. Afterwards it was modelled on a catwalk at the 2013 New Zealand Beauty Expo. Williams said she was shocked to be a finalist, let alone to win the con- test. She started her makeup training only in March this year. I ve always had a passion for it. I love that you can make someone look totally different, she said. A hairdresser at Rachel s Barber- shop in Porirua, she started an online course through QC Makeup Acad- emy, based in Australia, in May. Williams had four hours to complete the model s hair, makeup and outfit during the final, and used every minute of it , she said. Because I m half-Maori I did the sea god, which is Tangaroa. I used all the colours of the sea to match a sea god and kind of created my look from a paua shell. The contestants were judged on their complete look, colours and techniques and relation to their cultural theme, she said. Williams won the overall prize, receiving a $1500 professional makeup kit from Prosperina Cosme- tics, a $600 Dermalogica gift pack and $500 worth of makeup acces- sories from Kandystore. After completing her course this year, she plans to study special effects makeup and prosthetics at WelTec in the hope of becoming a film makeup artist.
